Alicante
Alicante is a city in Spain, the capital of the province of Alicante.
Alicante is one of the fastest-growing cities in Spain. The local economy is based upon tourism in the beaches from Costa Blanca coast and particularly the second residence construction boom which started in the 1960s and reinvigorated again by the late 1990s.
Alicante has an exceptional location between the mountains and the sea. This provides the city with a special kind of enrapturing beauty. Alicante's true charm is its individuality. The city is pervaded with the savour of the sea, playing its deeply felt role as a seaport, as it has always done.
City of Light
Alicante is famous for its wonderful boulevard with palm trees and shopping streets. The original name of the city “Lucentum” translates as ”City of Light”. This most attractive town along the Costa Blanca has stunning beaches, old plazas, parks, adventure and great weather. The city provides fun, entertainment and also a great nightlife to the tourists who can hang around till late hours.
The Castle of Santa Barbara
Amongst the most notable features of the city are its main castle, the Castle of Santa Bárbara, which sits high above the city, and its port. The Castle of Santa Barbara is one of the biggest mediaeval fortresses of Spain. This major landmark of the city stands on the top of Mount Benacantil, which offers the most fabulous views of the city.
San Juan Beach (La Playa de San Juan)
This premier sandy beach of the city is located around 4.5 miles from central Alicante. The long and open beach has been awarded the Blue Flag of the European Union. It is the perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming with a good selection of shops, bars, cafes, restaurants and water sports on the beach.
Festivals
The most important festival, the Bonfires of Saint John, takes place during the summer solstice. This is followed a week later by seven nights of firework and pyrotechnic contests between companies on the urban beach Playa del Postiguet. Another well-known festival is Moros y Cristianos in Altozano or San Blas district. Overall, the city boasts a year-round nightlife, helped by tourists, fun-loving residents, and a large student population of the University of Alicante
