1961-1970

1964
The Piper Aztec aircraft seating five passengers have become too small and four-engined DeHavilland Herons seating 15 passengers are acquired. These aircraft are used for carrying cargo, as well as passengers. During the period, the company also operates ferry flights across the Atlantic for American and Germany aircraft manufacturers and aerial survey flights in Greenland and other parts of the world.

1966
Cimber Air is granted a concession on the Sønderborg – Copenhagen service. In the meantime, the grass field in Sønderborg has become an asphalt runway with lighting and an air field has emerged.

1967
Cimber Air receives its first modern passenger aircraft, an ND 262 seating 29 passengers. Traffic is significantly expanded in Danish domestic flights and in West Germany in collaboration with Lufthansa.

1968
Due to plans of a new Alssund bridge and a ring road, Sønderborg Airport is relocated in 1968 to its present location at Arnkilsøre, and thanks to Ingolf L. Nielsen’s persistent efforts, Sønderborg today has its own airport. In the years ahead, the new airport becomes a blueprint for many small airports in Denmark and abroad.

1970
With the acquisition of Nord 262, Cimber Air is ready to take an active part in regional flight operations and in collaboration with Lufthansa, Cimber Air builds up a domestic route network in Germany.
Unfortunately, Cimber Air never sees the rewards of this work due to a serious air traffic controller labour dispute in West Germany that runs in two rounds for a total of more than 11 months. Due to the conflict, the initiated activities are abandoned and Cimber Air is forced to lay off almost 200 employees.
